Taunton Garrison Events Diary

The Taunton Garrison can provide a wide range of entertainment both military and civilian from the late sixteenth to late seventeenth century. We perform various Living History skills, also small skirmishes and weapons demonstrations. We cover three main historical periods - The Spanish Armada of 1588, the English Civil War of the 1640's and the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685.

Our Displays usually begin at 11am, but this may vary.
We have a rolling programme of displays. Please check with the venue to be sure of times. Note: Event time period codes - 1588 = Elizabethan, ECW = English Civil War, 1685 = Monmouth Rebellion.

Taunton Garrison second cannon named at Dunster Castle

Named after our long serving Taunton Garrison member (in fact one of the original members from 1996), Alan Wildman.  The cannon has been named 'Drum Major Wildman'. For part of his working life Alan was a real Drum Major in the British Army.

Filming with the BBC for Great British Railway Journeys.

With Michael Portillo, at Taunton Castle (Somerset Museum) 8th July 2015.
We were asked to prepare a sketch about the Bloody Assizes of 1685, for a programme in which Michael Portillo travels from Birmingham to Exeter, stopping at Taunton.
Bradshaw's Railway Guide, which he uses to plan the rail journeys, has a large section on the Monmouth Rebellion and the Bloody Assizes.

Mike, Alan S, Paul and Catherine (as photographer and support) made their way to a sunny hill top near Chard to meet the TV crew.  Monmouth's army camped here on 15th June 1685.  We were called upon to supply some historical context for the programme.
